Routes

North Union

Near the border of Knox and Waldo county lies North Union. It neighbors the towns of Washington, Appleton, and Liberty. It is here where you will find some of the most challenging climbs, scenic gravel roads, and vast views that the area has to offer. Along this route you pass by some fantastic country stores, breweries, and natural springs. Lake St. George is a great place to take a swim down at the state park. The water is very clear. On its northwest side lies Lake St. George Brewing with a great selection of microbrews, a food truck, and an outdoor lounge area nestled in the woods. If you have the time I suggest you stop at Liberty Tool in the town of Liberty. It is a three story tool and knick-knack antique store. You could spend hours there (I did). Making your way to Searsmont you’ll find another top-notch brewery called Threshers. It is just down the road from one of my favorite stretches of road in the area: Appleton Ridge Road. Its on this road you will get to climb, roll past expansive blueberry fields, get glimpses of the hills to the southeast and Northwest and of course ride some gravel.
